Sports & Remedial Massage

Sports & Remedial Massage

Commonly, sports and remedial massage is used to treat injuries. It is, however, also an effective preventative treatment for the health of muscle and connective tissue, range of movement, tone, symmetry, balance of muscle and quality of posture.

Sports massage is the specific application of massage techniques, hydrotherapy protocols, range of motion/flexibility protocol and strength-training principles to achieve a specific goal. Remedial massage is an integration of knowledge and techniques to provide a 'remedy' to muscular pain and dysfunction. The primary aim is to restore muscles to their 'factory settings'. Our practitioners use their understanding of the body and how it works and apply this through effective massage techniques.

I don't play sports; can I still have a massage?

It’s not just the sports person who can benefit from sports and remedial massage, everyone experiences aches and pains in life, from sporting injuries to occupational and emotional stresses.
Massage is a natural therapy involving a range of techniques, in order to relieve tension, increase blood circulation, break down scar tissue and enhance recovery.

I recently injured myself; can I have a massage straight away?

We always recommend that clients follow the RICE principles; rest, ice, compression, elevation.  All injuries should be seen by a medical practitioner, if you are not 100% sure that it is only a minor muscle injury, you must consult one as soon as possible.
We do not recommend massage immediately, usually 2-3 days after injury and only when the RICE steps have been followed. However, please do feel free to give us a call to discuss the injury and we can recommend treatment.

How often should I have sports massage?

This depends on each individual and your reasons for massage. Sports massage can be received as often as you like; this is provided you are not suffering from any condition for which massage is contra-indicated. People often find a weekly massage helps to control their stress levels, while others find that a maintenance treatment every few weeks or even monthly works well.

What should I wear?

There is no set dress code for sports massage. Usually you will be asked to remove clothing from the area being treated (except for underwear). Males may prefer to wear shorts and females may feel more comfortable in bikini style underwear. Towels are used throughout the session to keep you warm and comfortable.

Does sports massage hurt?

Sometimes sports massage can be a little uncomfortable.  Please remember that you are always in charge, so if you’re uncomfortable in any way please say and we’ll try a different approach.  It is not unusual to feel a little post massage soreness for a day or two after a deep tissue massage. This is normal and shows that the treatment has had an effect – and that the body is healing. Common post massage advice includes warming the area with a hot bath or a hot water bottle, drinking lots of water and gentle stretching if necessary. If the area appears swollen and persistently warm to the touch, ice can be used to reduce inflammation.  Your practitioner will prescribe methods, which will aid you after your first treatment.
