Sports & Remedial Massage

Sports & Remedial Massage

Commonly, sports and remedial massage is used to treat injuries. It is, however, also an effective preventative treatment for the health of muscle and connective tissue, range of movement, tone, symmetry, balance of muscle and quality of posture.

Sports massage is the specific application of massage techniques, hydrotherapy protocols, range of motion/flexibility protocol and strength-training principles to achieve a specific goal. Remedial massage is an integration of knowledge and techniques to provide a 'remedy' to muscular pain and dysfunction. The primary aim is to restore muscles to their 'factory settings'. Our practitioners use their understanding of the body and how it works and apply this through effective massage techniques.

Who should have sports and remedial massage treatments?

Our sport massage therapists are professionally trained to treat active individuals who take part in sport, from grass roots to professional level as well as those who are not as active. In today’s society desks have become the new running track and stress the new precursor to many modern illnesses. Many of us are time poor and therefore looking after ourselves is often not a priority. To prevent stress and tension related issues, everyone would benefit from regular treatments.

What are the benefits of sports and remedial massage?
  • Releasing tension
  • Increasing quality and quantity of sports training by reducing recovery time
  • Preventing injuries
  • Improved muscle flexibility and associated range of movement

  • An enhanced immune system
  • Relief for tired and aching muscles
  • Improved posture and general body awareness
  • Mental relaxation

The ultimate goal of sports and remedial massage is to improve your performance and enhance your enjoyment of sport and to improve your quality of life.

  • Whiplash
  • Post operative care
  • Lower back pain

I don't play sports; can I still have a massage?

It’s not just the sports person who can benefit from sports and remedial massage, everyone experiences aches and pains in life, from sporting injuries to occupational and emotional stresses.
Massage is a natural therapy involving a range of techniques, in order to relieve tension, increase blood circulation, break down scar tissue and enhance recovery.

I recently injured myself; can I have a massage straight away?

We always recommend that clients follow the RICE principles; rest, ice, compression, elevation.  All injuries should be seen by a medical practitioner, if you are not 100% sure that it is only a minor muscle injury, you must consult one as soon as possible.
We do not recommend massage immediately, usually 2-3 days after injury and only when the RICE steps have been followed. However, please do feel free to give us a call to discuss the injury and we can recommend treatment.

How often should I have sports massage?

This depends on each individual and your reasons for massage. Sports massage can be received as often as you like; this is provided you are not suffering from any condition for which massage is contra-indicated. People often find a weekly massage helps to control their stress levels, while others find that a maintenance treatment every few weeks or even monthly works well.

What should I wear?

There is no set dress code for sports massage. Usually you will be asked to remove clothing from the area being treated (except for underwear). Males may prefer to wear shorts and females may feel more comfortable in bikini style underwear. Towels are used throughout the session to keep you warm and comfortable.

Does sports massage hurt?

Sometimes sports massage can be a little uncomfortable.  Please remember that you are always in charge, so if you’re uncomfortable in any way please say and we’ll try a different approach.  It is not unusual to feel a little post massage soreness for a day or two after a deep tissue massage. This is normal and shows that the treatment has had an effect – and that the body is healing. Common post massage advice includes warming the area with a hot bath or a hot water bottle, drinking lots of water and gentle stretching if necessary. If the area appears swollen and persistently warm to the touch, ice can be used to reduce inflammation.  Your practitioner will prescribe methods, which will aid you after your first treatment.

What Our Customers Have To Say

My problem was irritated and restless legs. It wasn’t that they hurt me, they just ached and were sometimes jumpy during the night. After the massage Ciara was able to give me a summary of what may be causing my issue and advised me of the stretches I could do in my own time to reduce the problem. I left feeling like I was walking on air and slept like a baby that night!

Nikki Zachariou

Uberedge Dance Company and School

I started seeing Ciara when I was five months pregnant and starting to get lower back and hip ache. I was put completely at ease and felt very welcome. I went on to have treatments each month until my little one was born. Each was tailored to meet my changing needs as I progressed through pregnancy and even areas I didn't realise were under strain before the sessions were also dealt with!

Helen Vieira

Pregnancy Massage

Thank you for your input into the Danish National Cricket Team on our recent trip to the European Championships in Jersey. Without your expertise and professional service I don’t think we would have managed to go seven days with a full squad players!

Simon Talbot

Danish National Team Coach

Thank you very much for your help during our stay. It was a very good help to my players – without this, many of them certainly would have not been able to play five matches during seven days.

Ole Roland

Secretary General, Danish National Cricket

After several years of increasing pain in my shoulder I finally followed the recommendation of a friend. In just three sessions Ciara has sorted my shoulder out. A sports massage does go deep, but it also works. Ciara is very professional, patient, knowledgeable and friendly. I have no hesitation in recommending Ciara to anyone who has short or long term injuries or just aches and pains.

Carl Corbel

Having sustained a serious ankle fracture, Ciara has been instrumental in my recovery. So many people overlook muscular damage and simply concentrate on healing the bones. With regular massage I was back to full mobility well ahead of time. For someone who didn't rate massage as a treatment, I am now a complete convert and I still have regular maintenance sessions.

Marisa Ballantyne

Sports massage was something that evoked the word fear in my mind. Ciara arrived at my home, a treat in itself with two young children. Ciara was totally professional, answered my 101 questions and my muscles certainly knew they had been worked. No longer, am I in acute pain. I definitely recommend trying a sports massage and hopefully it will relieve you of back pain as it has done me.

Zoë Hotton

Ciara Ahern was of huge benefit to me in the run up to the end of Jersey RFC's 1st XV season. Had it not been for the effective and thorough treatment provided, I would not have played any part in the National League 3 Championship semi final, the Siam Cup or the Championship final at Twickenham.
